Unicorns are mythical creatures, normally portrayed as slender, white horses that have a single horn growing from their foreheads. This horn is normally a spiral shape. They are normally wild and un-tamable and some are even shown to have wings. There are varying appearances and behavioral differences in unicorns from one culture to another, but the general western belief is that they are the beautiful white horse-like animal that most art portrays. Unicorns are believed to have great intelligence and wisdom which humans are unable to comprehend. Unicorns are often believed to be divine in nature and pure in heart so pure that to harm a unicorn would be to consign one's self to immediate and eternal damnation. Unicorns also have extraordinary healing and creative powers which bless those fortunate enough to come in contact with them. Moreover, they have come to symbolize freedom; freedom from imprisonment, classifications, and categorization. In traditional mythology, the unicorn's horn is white at the base, black in the middle, and has a sharp, red tip. The horn is the source of the unicorn's healing abilities and is believed to even have the power to raise the dead. If filed down, the dust of a unicorn's horn can be used to guard against poison and many other diseases. In the Middle Ages, it was fashionable for nobility and royalty to own a drinking cup crafted from the horn of a unicorn because of its ability to detect poison. In different cultures, unicorns have been depicted as goat-like creatures with beards and cloven hooves. In China they are called Ki-lin, while in Japan unicorns are called Kirin. In these oriental countries, the unicorn is believed to be peace-loving, humble, and a bringer of good fortune. |
