Fairies are normally portrayed as beautiful, young, winged women endowed with magical powers. The name fairy most likely comes from the words fae, meaning friend, and eire, which means green. Therefore, the name Fairy, or Faerie, means green friend". In original folklore, fairies, or faeries, were known to bestow gifts upon newborn children. They gave generous gifts such as beauty, wealth, and kindness. The myth about fairies developed through the years and they were believed to continue in their original gift giving traditions, but also became known to be mischievous and meddled in many human affairs. According to folklore, faeries can actually only be seen clearly by animals. Yet in very rare instances, humans may be able to catch a momentary glance of a fairy if they are fortunate enough. However, there do exist a few exceptions to this rule. One exception is when fairies choose to use a power known as glamour to enable humans to be able to see them. Another exception takes place during a full moon on Midsummer Eve in which a mortal is able to witness fairy dances or celebrations. Finally, fairies can be seen clearly by humans by looking through a self-bored stone one in which a hole has been made by the act of tumbling in the waters of a mountain brook. |
